10 Questions with Harry Tincknell

Harry Tincknell is one of the most exciting racing talents to come out of the UK in recent years, and I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon in the studio shooting him for the Ford GT campaign. (This was actually the only one of the drivers that we had the luxury of being in a studio for!)

Harry will race in three legs of the FIA World Endurance Championship, Silverstone, Spa and most importantly, Le Mans 24hr. Having won the 24hr event in 2014 in the LMP2 class, Ford will be hoping Harry can repeat that amazing result this year in the GT.

The Questions

NS: How long have you been racing for?

HT: I started when I was 8 years old in Go Karts so 16 years now
NS: How did you get into it?

HT: When I was 7 I went on holiday to Sardinia and opposite the hotel was a kart track. I went there everyday and was totally hooked and when I came back to the UK for my 8th birthday I got my first go kart and the rest is history!

NS: What is the best thing about your sport?

HT: The adrenaline rush.

NS: What is your proudest sporting moment?

HT: Winning Le Mans on my debut in 2014 in the LMP2 class with Jota Sport **(This was only Harry’s 4th professional race!)**

NS: Who inspires you and why?

HT: Mika Hakkinen has always been my hero. He was super fast on a qualifying lap and very level headed in the races. He’s a two time World Champion and inspired me to start in karting.

NS: What are your sporting goals?

HT: I want to be the first man to win Le Mans in each of the different classes. LMP1, LMP2 and GT. I’ve done it P2, now I have the chance to do it in GT.

NS: Do you have any hobbies outside of racing?

HT: I like watching all sports really and spend a lot of time on my fitness and playing squash and golf.

NS: Do you have any sponsorships?

HT: I am sponsored by Goodridge which is one of the biggest fluid solutions company involved in the automotive industry. Their head office is very close to where I live back in Exeter and we use their products on the Ford GT.

NS:  Who are the biggest names in your sport?

HT: Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Mark Webber, Anthony Davidson, Andy Priaulx

NS: How does someone new to the sport get involved?

HT: Indoor karting is a great and cheap way to start. Unfortunately motorsport is very expensive to get into so you have to be very lucky to get the chance to show what you can do at a high level

NS: And finally, what are your three top training tips?

HT: 1 – Work hard on your fitness, especially your neck strength.

2 – Spend a lot of time in the simulator perfecting your driving technique.

3 – Read up on the mechanical engineering aspect of motorsport to improve your feedback and have a better understanding of how to set a car up.
